PASADENA, Calif. - NASA and the University of Arizona, Tucson, held a televised press briefing at 11 a.m. PDT (2 p.m. EDT) on Wednesday, June 4, to report on the latest news from NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander mission.
|
The panel featured some of the international partners on the Phoenix Mission, who reported on the specific plan for digging, the health of the robotic arm, some of the interesting features named "Snow Queen" and "Holly Cow" and the tell tale instrument that measures wind speed. There are new animations and visualizations that depict the topography of the digging area in relation to the lander and the robotic arm that will be available here on the MUSE site.

MAY 28 Telecon featured speaker:
Mark Lemmon, Texas A&M University, Co-Investigator, SSI Lead, Dust Cycles
Mark Lemmon is a Participating Scientist for the Mars Exploration Rovers, a Co-Investigator for the 2007 Mars Phoenix Scout Mission, and a Co-Investigator for the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory mission. Lemmon's role in Phoenix is to serve as the scientific lead for the Surface Stereo Imager (SSI). He will participate in the effort design and build the camera, representing the needs of the science team to ensure that the camera can perform as needed on Mars. In addition, he will help in the effort to design operations scenarios and practicing on Earth to make Mars surface operations go smoothly. Lemmon is also a member of the Atmospheric Science Theme Group, and will use camera and other data to study the properties of dust in the Martian atmosphere.

It was incredibly busy getting images ready for the press briefings on landing night, so the priority was on tv-ready versions. The high-resolution versions of videos and animations for large screens have not yet been processed. We hope you understand!!!! We'll be working with the folks who produce those this afternoon to build a faster release into their process so it's smoother as we progress in the mission.
